Day 1 (25.08.2027)
The day will be dedicated to the GELSTRAT program, including the Nicola bed project focused on a distinctive sapropelic unit marking the Neogene–Quaternary boundary at Monte San Nicola, Sicily.
This session will feature the invited keynote lectures: “The Neogene–Quaternary boundary interval at the type section of Monte San Nicola, near Gela, Sicily – a review” by Prof. Martin J. Head, Brock University, Canada
“Post-Messinian evolution of the Mediterranean Basin” by Prof. Antonio Caruso, University of Palermo, Italy
Day 2 (26.08.2027)
The focus will shift to deep-time climate reconstructions, with particular emphasis on the Late Cretaceous and its implications for understanding long-term climate dynamics. The following invited keynote lectures will be delivered:
“Cretaceous to Paleogene gateways in the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean: impact on global climate and circulation” by Prof. Uisdean Nicholson, Heriot-Watt University, Scotland.
“Latest Cretaceous inoceramids and ammonites from the East African subprovince and adjacent biochores: biostratigraphic and biogeographic implications” by Prof. Ireneusz Walaszczyk, University of Warsaw, Poland
Day 3 (27.08.2027)
The final day will include additional presentations addressing past, present, and future climate dynamics, as well as dedicated discussion on the future directions and development of the GELSTRAT program.
The workshop will conclude with closing remarks by Prof. Martin J. Head, who will present perspectives on the Anthropocene and its stratigraphic and climatic significance.
“The Anthropocene as an epoch – past, present and future.”
